Day 13
Brussels, Belgium
The hostel in Brussels was in the middle of what I like to call
"little Lebanon" the hostel was pretty hot but met some Interesting people,
one guy from San Fran who played the Irish Flute. I hated Brussels and got
hopelessly lost trying to find the statue of "manequin pis" after more than
an hour following my map and with a ladies help I found it! I would tell people
to only go to Brussels with a tour or something like that. This is the first
place where I had real problems communicating and now anytime I hear the
phrase "Bon Sua(sp?)" it gives me the creeps.
Day 14
Brussels, Belgium; Amsterdam, Netherlands
I was glad to get out of that city (Brussels) and headed for Amsterdam
on the train.
It's a little scary walking down the main street from the Amsterdam train
station but I found my hostel quickly "Durty Nelly’s" and the lady there
was really nice. That night I walked around some and....
Day 15, 16
Amsterdam, Netherlands
The next morning I met one of my dorm mates and we went to mikes
bike tour together, the bike tour was pretty fun but I didn't like the
bike they gave me as usual everything is too small for me. The bike tour
took us to a cheese/clog factory, which was quite interesting. The tour
guide at the factory was a real character and after the tour he said I
should play football with the local team, which is soccer to Americans,
then he asked me how much I weighed and I replied 600 pounds. In hindsight
I shouldn't have said that but I added that I didn't know what that converted
to in kilos. A rather scary experience I had the day before while walking
in the main shopping street I and everyone else there too saw a transvestite
wearing just a nightie and spiked heels with leg straps, hiding barely nothing,
lots of people were surprised and laughing but for some reason I wasn't shocked,
I thought he/she had a lot of balls, I mean guts! But I don't know what the
point of it all was.
I went to a bookstore, which had lots of cool travelogues,
which I have not heard of, but the prices were too high. I must go back
and write down some of the titles when I meet Alex here later on in my trip.
It was impossible to find an Internet place that had USB, and the few that
did have it, they had disabled USB, they claimed USB could spread a virus.
In England and Scotland I didn't have this problem. On the train I had met
a couple from Canada and saw them again when walking in the red light district
and we agreed to meet for some beers the next night which we did, the girl
was really small and had eaten a whole "space cake" which is a brownie
with pot in it. She was falling asleep while we talked....
Day 17,18,19
Amsterdam, Netherlands; Dresden, Germany
I finally got a hold of my friend Alex and took the early morning
train to Dresden. The day before I left I went out to this lake in the countryside
and relaxed, I had to, the city was too much for me. It was called T'thske
and it was so relaxing. I got a little burnt on my belly and chest. In
Dresden Alex and I went to eat and that was where I first experienced the
East German Attitude. They don't really laugh and don't like foreigners
or minorities this is in general but pretty common. Americans are very
loud to them and they all stared at me quite a bit. Also they stared at
my big white basketball shoes. We walked to this outdoor concert and often
we walked over the bridge to the Sting concert. We were laughing a little
too loud and a punk rocker yelled at us: "Yankee's go Home!" after we passed.
We laughed about it but it is really a terrible thing to experience. It
gave me some fresh perspective on being a foreigner.
The next day I went with Alex to a BBQ with his friend from work
Florian. It was Alex, myself and 2 couples and I really enjoyed drinking
and talking with them. The guys were friendly and talkative but didn’t
always understand my English. I learned the words: Schwartz - Black, bier
- Beer and eine - one, gezapth - draft. Where Alex was staying there was
a nice pool with massage jets and a waterfall and the staff there were
very helpful.
Day 20
Prague, Czech Republic
After 2 days in Dresden I went to Prague and met a couple of nice
girls from Argentina who didn't speak much English so I practiced my Spanish
quite a bit. Prague is an interesting and cheap town with very cheap beer
that isn't very tasty, and the town also has beggars, prostitutes and casinos.
Day 21
Prague, Czech Republic; Dresden, Germany
The next day I saw the castle and hill with cherry trees then went
back to Dresden stayed that day and went to Munich on the night train.
Day 22
Munich, Germany
Munich was a nice enough town not with the East German mentality
from Dresden and much more of a melting pot. The glockenspiel and Englischer
Gardens were nice enough. The Hofbrau House was fun and I met some guys
from USA and we celebrated 4th of July then they got kicked out and I met
a really nice German family and only the daughter spoke some English, it
was fun talking to them especially after 3 large "Schwartz biers"
Day 23
Munich, Germany; Zurich, Switzerland
July the 5th I headed for Zurich and met a family from Orlando
on the platform in Munich while I was waiting for the train. The dad is
a chemistry professor at Valencia where I went to school in Orlando and
some of my friends had him for class. Zurich was a nice enough town but
as is par for the course in Switzerland it was expensive. The do however
offer free water fountains all over the place, which isn't average in Europe.
I saw a fountain in Dresden like this too but didn't realize what it was
for until someone told me. They are usually statues spewing forth water
into some kind of pool or stone bath the water is very clean and looks clear
when you hold it up to the light. I met a guy from Sweden, Milos and two
guys from Columbia.
Day 24
Zurich, Switzerland
We all (Milos, 2 Columbian dudes) went to Zurich Fest the next
night it was too crowded and techno for me, and all the bands sounded awful
mostly cover bands. I also went to Utliberg during the day, which is a
hotel on top of a hill (small mountain) overlooking the city and lake and
another valley on the other side. The forest (on top of the hill surrounding
the hotel) was really nice calm and pretty and would be a great all day hike
some day.
Day 25
Le Locle, Switzerland
On to Le Locle, first I had to take the train from Zurich to Neuchatel
and another train to La Chaux-de-Fonds the hostel was not open until 5
pm and dead quiet I walked around for a bit and also received more stares
then in the big city. Went and saw the movie "Virgin Suicides" in English
which was good. I met a Robert and the guy at the Cinema/Bar/Theater Ro-ger
was really nice. There are tons of flies there (in the bar) and people
didn't care if they had flies crawling on them. That evening I took the
bus to Le Locle and there was a huge street carnival/Festival, ate some
Rosti (Roas-ch-tee), which is almost like hash browns, got stared at quite
a bit. This town is the home of my ancestors (on my fathers side)
Day 26
La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland; Lausanne, Switzerland
The next day I left my pack at the station and went to Les Brenets.
The ferry to the waterfall Saut-de-Doubs was cool, a guy was playing the
accordion on the ferry, and the waterfall was COOL!
Climbed down on the rocks and read for a few. I would love to come
back here camping and the other side of the river is France. That day I
took the train to Lausanne. The Lady in train office (BITCH!) told me the
hostel" the only one in town" was full. It was a bit of a walk but I finally
found it and they were not full or she lied to make money on reserving me
something more expensive. Anyways the lakefront there is a great view the
park is very big and run along the waterfront. I don't know why we don't
have more parks like that in Florida.
Day 27
Lausanne, Switzerland; Montreux, Switzerland
So the next day I met up with Ania who I met in London. We went
to the Olympic museum, which was somewhat interesting the sculptures outside
are weird and funny and the landscaping is super. Went to eat at a pizza
place that had all these funny names for their pizzas: Bill Clinton, Spice
Girls, etc. Pizza was good. Most of the walks back from the lakeside are
uphill so I wish we would have taken the bus up to town but she insisted
on walking. Went to a church and placed a prayer note for the priests to
read. Don’t know if its bad to read other peoples but some were very stupid
one about wanting to win some sports game and another about genital warts.
So that evening I headed for Montreux which is very close to Lausanne, on
the train its about 20 minutes, the hostel is Montreux is nice, its right
by the water and I got a program for the jazz festival which is much more
than jazz. I found out that Beck and Calexico 2 bands that interest me were
playing that night so I went to it and enjoyed it very much.
Day 28
Montreaux, Switzerland
The next night I got to see Neil Young and The Black Crowes. Both
were very good.
Day 29
Montreaux, Switzerland; Interlaken, Switzerland
That next morning I woke up a bit late and caught the train to
Interlaken. Interlaken is a gorgeous place surrounded by Hazy blue lakes
and steep mountains. The hostel there is Balmers very Frat-house-ish but
a nice place. I should go back to Interlaken and either stay at Balmers
Tent (right down the road) or a place less jocko. I wanted to go in the
mountains hiking but I was too tired and didn't have time. I had to meet
Alex in Amsterdam in 2 days. I drank too much that night and woke up feeling
like shit.
Day 30
Interlaken, Switzerland; Baden Baden, Germany
After I somewhat recuperated, I got ready and took the train to
Baden Baden. The town is nice, clean and pretty, the hostel is full of kids
maybe like a summer camp for young’ins. There is a casino and spa in Baden
Baden, which I didn't go to due to tiredness and lack of money. I had a very
tasty snack a granola type bar but tasted like those little sesame seed
bars.
Day 31
Baden Baden, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands
Next day went to Amsterdam along the Rhine river is where the train
went, it wasn't as pretty as I imagined but still might be a good relaxing
boat ride. In Amsterdam I stopped by Durty Nelly’s to get my lock back
that I had left but Mieke had thrown it away, no problem she's very nice
and I told her thanks for recommending the lake trip to T'Thiske that I
took last time I was in Amsterdam. Met up with Alex, Kurt Hillman, Chrissy
and Gho at the Radisson SAS. Went out with them and Mike’s brother Brian
who owns a shop/Barber Shop/Surf & Skate Clothes. We went out to eat
at a Chinese place and my dish was called Tjap Tjoy. Drank beer at some
local dive, pretty boring time
Day 34
Salzburg, Austria
After 3 more days in Amsterdam I never need to go back, maybe some
of the other towns in the Netherlands. Salzburg is a nice city, calm peaceful
and not many nightclubs or troublemakers, the hostel is cheap but they
nickel and dime you to death. No free breakfast you must pay for the showers.
I finally checked my account balance and found out that I have about 150
bucks left (15 days left!). Wrote my dad asking for more money ended up
staying 4 nights.
Day 37
Salzburg, Austria; Vienna, Austria
On the third day I took the 3-hour train to Vienna. Vienna was
a big bustling city with not too much to do. There is Stephens dome and
old church and a carnival park. The carnival was good, I think it runs
all year round and had many rides named after famous movies: Superman,
and a blatant Star Wars Rip-off but I guess the (movie) studios don’t have
Jurisdiction over here to sue them or just don't care. The coolest ride
they had was a hot air balloon which was attached to a chain and it pulls
it down and then lets the chain back up to load and unload passengers, this
is a really cool idea but I was surprised it only had one chain to hold it.
I only ended up spending 4 hours in Vienna but I had seen enough. Back to
Salzburg.
Day 38
Salzburg, Austria
I am now up on top of the rocky cliff, which runs along the south
side of Salzburg the walk up here isn't too hard you just follow the river
west then up to the Augustiner Brau house then up the stairs. There are some
great views and it is quite relaxing, also discovered a great meadow but
there were tons of insects so I just trotted through to where I now sit. I
started thinking about my life back home and what I am going to do until I
run out of money. I had a somewhat unpleasant dream, but unfortunately I
don't really care, the dream should bother me and mean something but This
world has made me cold, not always, things can warm up my heart and make me
be nice, for example: Genuinely nice people, good friends who aren't fake,
good movies, happy kids who are playful and childish.
I still have to walk over and see the Salzburg castle it doesn't
seem to be on the same hill as where I am now but it may be. Not sure if
I can get there from here but I'll give it a shot. Tomorrow leaving to
Dresden to spend the night and then Saturday morning we head to Berlin for
love fest.
That night I drank way too much Wiessbier and met a bunch of cool
kids one being Michael Wall, he had this saying "sorted”, he would ask people
"are you sorted now" as in like are you all good is everything cool? I
really liked it and we laughed about it and many other things quite a bit.
That hostel bar got pretty crazy, I was hanging with Michael a couple Swede
guys and these 2 guys from Norway. I had a blast.
Day 39
Salzburg, Austria
I felt the worst ever today, that Wiessbier gave me the worst headache/hangover
in my life, the whole train ride to Dresden I thought I was going to throw
up.
Day 40
Dresden, Germany; Berlin, Germany
This morning Alex I and a couple other guys he works with drove
from Dresden to Berlin we checked into a nice hotel I think there were 5
of us total, one big black dude named Marcus "Mack" he was real cool and
funny. The love parade was later on that day it was total insanity, the streets
were so crowded and we were drinking I got so tired I don't know how I made
it through that. Saw a few of the sights in Berlin that afternoon.
Day 41
Hamburg, Germany
Next morning Alex and I left our friends and drove to Hamburg,
it was a pretty dirty town it has a decent park and there was a nice museum
and a lake and pond but that was the highlight. The best thing I liked was
going to the docks and just seeing all the big ships and docks. There are
tons of prostitutes there and it gets pretty annoying. Nothing much more to
see or do in that town
Day 42
Hamburg, Germany
Took the train to Cinque Terre, Italy which was quite a long train
ride over night.
Day 43
Cinque Terre, Italy
When I got to La Spezia there was quite a bit of trouble and confusion
on how to get to Cinque Terre I had to take another local train but couldn't
find anyone to help me get on the right train so I walked to the tourist
office, the town itself was pretty interesting looking and nice especially
on the waterfront, had some hassle changing money at the bank and they had
a pretty sophisticated double door system where u leave you bags outside,
but I finally figured it all out and got on the right train. The train took
me to this village, RioMaggiore that was basically built in the rocks the
hostel was booked and I didn't like the village much anyways the roads were
way to steep and it was very small and cramped. At the hostel after I pressed
them for a bit they found me a room in a town down the way, I'm so glad
they did. The town I went to was called Levanto and it was wonderful. It
was on the water, the hostel was nice and the people were friendly enough.
Laid out on the rocks at the beach and swam a bit, the water was so clean
and blue. They had some kind of religious parade that night, it was interesting
and I ate way too many Italian ice creams. Found out I could understand a
little bit of Italian.
Day 44
Levanto, Italy
Wish I could have stayed longer in this village I think I could
live there its so nice and beautiful, this is what you imagine the Italian
Rivera is like. Took the train to Monte Carlo, which isn't too far maybe
a couple hours from Levanto. Monte Carlo was a bitch I needed to change my
money and it was a F@#$ing nightmare trying to find a bank or place that
would change it. All the banks are private. The train station is super nice
and they have a really long escalator. I had to climb hills all over town
till I finally found a place in this mall to change my money. After much,
much walking I found the hostel, I was exhausted and just relaxed and walked
down and had a pizza. After some recuperating I walked around the waterfront
and looked at all the yachts. Not much else to do here unless you have
lots of money, there is the casino, its a nice town but I wouldn't want
to stay here long so I didn't.
Day 45
Nice, France; Cannes France
Nice and Cannes are very similar they both face the same direction
towards the waterfront and their waterfronts were very similar. The beaches
were both very nice, Nice is bigger, and they are very close to each other.
After exploring and sweating my ass off in both towns I took the night
train to Paris, met a nice French lady in the train station and she didn't
speak English but somehow we communicated she was really sweet.
Day 46-49
Paris, France
Arrived early in the morning before anything was open, felt like
total nastiness needed to shower bad. Walked to the hostel from the train
station it was quite a haul but it was nice to just walk the streets of
Paris while no one was around. It’s a big city but still seems to have charm
most everywhere you walk. Got a good room in the hostel cause it was 2-person
room but no one else was staying in it. Met some cool people from Louisiana
and hung with them one night, ate Greek food, Saw a bunch of sites on my
own too, Eiffel tower was by far the best thing, Notre Dame is also quite
cool and I suggest taking the climbing tour up the towers to see the gargoyles
and the view of the city. Went with the girl from Louisiana to The Palace
of Versailles, it was really pretty, the floors were creaky, I liked it
a lot, ate at some Australian pub/eatery it was interesting.
Day 50
Paris, France; London, England
Took the night bus back to London, it was really strange when the
bus drove into the train car to go through the Chunnel (English Channel Tunnel)
I feel asleep soon after and woke up in London.
Day 51(LAST DAY!)
London, England; Manchester, England
Wandered around London a bit, rode on the British Eye which is
the giant ferris wheel next to the Thames, near Big Ben, You can see for
miles and miles literally. Took a nap in the park before I caught the train
to the airport. A bomb blew up near that park a few weeks later. Flew to
Manchester and then slept in the airport cause my flight was early in the
morning and I got there too late to check in anywhere reasonably priced.
Epilogue:
IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK HOME! So good!!! 2 months (almost) is more
than enough time to spend away from home.
